Grand Haven, Michigan is a fun and easy Lake Michigan getaway for families. We stayed nearby in Muskegon and spent our trip enjoying beaches, lighthouses, mini golf, ice cream, shopping, sunsets, and a few simple kid-friendly stops that made the trip feel relaxed instead of overplanned.

Where We Stayed Near Grand Haven
We stayed at the Hampton Inn Muskegon, which worked well as a convenient home base for visiting Grand Haven and the surrounding Lake Michigan area. Muskegon is close enough to Grand Haven that it made sense for our trip, especially since we also wanted to visit beaches and activities nearby.

Best Things to Do in Grand Haven and Muskegon With Kids
1. Explore the Lake Michigan Lighthouses and Piers
One of our favorite parts of the trip was exploring the lighthouses and piers along the Lake Michigan shoreline near both Grand Haven and Muskegon. Between the long pier walks, bright red lighthouse views, beach scenery, and waves rolling in from Lake Michigan, it was one of the prettiest parts of the trip.

Be careful near the pier, especially if waves are high. Lake Michigan can look peaceful and then suddenly act like it has something to prove.
2. Spend Time at Pere Marquette Park
One of our favorite beach stops was Pere Marquette Park in Muskegon. It has a beautiful white-sand beach right on Lake Michigan, with plenty of space for kids to play, dig, swim, and burn off road trip energy.
Lake Michigan beach days in Grand Haven were some of the simplest and best moments of the trip.
Buckets, shovels, sandy feet, and hours of entertainment. Grand Haven was the kind of beach town where the kids stayed busy from sunrise to sunset.
3. Watch Kite Surfers at Muskegon Beach
We also visited the beach in Muskegon and got to watch kite surfers out on Lake Michigan. This was such a cool bonus because the kids loved watching the colorful kites move across the water.
One of the coolest surprises in Grand Haven was watching kite surfers glide across Lake Michigan near the pier and shoreline.
4. Play Mini Golf at Craig’s Cruisers
One evening in Muskegon, we went to Craig’s Cruisers and played mini golf. They have a lot more than mini golf, including go-karts, bumper boats, arcade games, batting cages, and other family activities, but mini golf was the perfect easy evening activity for us.

Downtown Grand Haven is a cute area to walk around with kids. We did some shopping, wandered through town, and enjoyed the laid-back beach-town feel. It is a nice break between beach time and dinner or ice cream.
6. Get Ice Cream at Temptations
Of course, no Lake Michigan family trip is complete without ice cream. We stopped at Temptations in Grand Haven, and the kids were very much on board with this decision. Ice cream on vacation is basically a required food group.
Temptations was a fun ice cream stop while shopping and exploring downtown Grand Haven.
7. Watch the Sunset Over Lake Michigan
Grand Haven sunsets are worth sticking around for. Whether you watch from the beach, the pier area, or near the lighthouse, Lake Michigan puts on a show in the evening.

South Haven, Michigan With Kids: Is It Worth Visiting?
Yes. South Haven is absolutely worth visiting with kids, especially if your family likes beach days, small-town charm, sunsets, ice cream, water activities, and a trip that does not require a minute-by-minute itinerary. It feels relaxed, pretty, and very family-friendly.
Where We Stayed in South Haven
We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express South Haven by IHG. For our family, it worked well because it had an indoor pool, breakfast, and an easy location for getting around South Haven. It was also close to Sherman’s Dairy Bar, which made ice cream dangerously convenient. No complaints from the kids on that one.

South Beach is one of the main reasons families visit South Haven. The beach is wide, sandy, and close to the iconic red South Haven Lighthouse. Our kids had plenty of room to play in the sand, swim, and enjoy a classic Lake Michigan beach day.

2. Watch the Sunset Over Lake Michigan
South Haven sunsets are absolutely worth planning your evening around. We watched the sun go down near the beach and lighthouse, and it was one of the prettiest parts of the trip. The sky turned orange and pink, the water sparkled, and everyone slowed down for a few minutes, which is basically vacation magic.

3. Spend the Day at Lake Arvesta Farms & Arvesta Sports Complex
One of the biggest highlights of our South Haven trip was visiting Lake Arvesta Farms & Arvesta Sports Complex. This family-friendly spot has a huge inflatable water park obstacle course along with lawn games, seating areas, food options, and space for families to relax while kids play.
The inflatable course includes climbing walls, slides, balance obstacles, jumping areas, floating pathways, and giant inflatable structures spread across the water. Our kids could have stayed there all day. It felt like a giant floating ninja-warrior-style playground mixed with a summer camp energy and a beach day.

What we also liked was that it was not just the inflatable water area. There were lawn games like cornhole, picnic-style seating, umbrellas, areas to relax, and a casual atmosphere that worked really well for families.

Family Tip:

Downtown South Haven is cute, walkable, and easy to explore with kids. There are shops, restaurants, ice cream spots, and places to wander without needing a big plan. We loved that South Haven gave us that classic beach-town feel without feeling too complicated.

5. Eat at South Beach Café
We ate lunch at South Beach Café one day, and it was a great casual stop during our South Haven trip. It worked well for a family beach day because it was easy, relaxed, and close to the lakefront area.

6. Get Ice Cream at Sherman’s Dairy Bar
We also stopped at Sherman’s Dairy Bar for ice cream, which was right across the street from our hotel. This was one of those easy little vacation wins because after a beach day, ice cream that close feels less like dessert and more like destiny.

1. Take the Saugatuck Dune Rides
The Saugatuck Dune Rides were one of the most memorable parts of our visit. The ride gives families a fun way to see the dunes without having to hike the entire area on foot. It is bumpy, sandy, scenic, and just adventurous enough for kids to think it is exciting.

You may notice face masks in a few of our older photos from this trip. This visit took place during the COVID-era travel period when masks were still required or strongly encouraged in certain attractions and public spaces. Thankfully, that is no longer the case now, but the memories were still just as fun.
Family Tip:
Book ahead if you are visiting during a busy summer weekend. Dune rides are popular and can fill up quickly.
2. Explore the Sand Dunes
The dunes are what make this part of Michigan feel extra special. Kids can climb, dig, run, and burn off energy while parents get those wide-open sand and sky views. It is one of those places where you do not need much planned because the landscape itself becomes the activity.

🌾 Why Families Love the Saugatuck Dune Rides
The Saugatuck Dune Rides ended up being one of the highlights of our entire Michigan trip. The ride takes you through massive rolling sand dunes, wooded trails, and scenic Lake Michigan overlooks while mixing local history, humor, and a little bit of adventure along the way. Kids absolutely love it.
You will bounce through the dunes in open-air vehicles while learning fun stories about the area and seeing views you would never normally reach on your own.
Hiking Through Saugatuck Dunes State Park to the Beach 🌲🥾
One thing to know before visiting Saugatuck Dunes State Park is that getting to the beach can be part of the adventure. The wooded trails at Saugatuck Dunes State Park eventually lead toward the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline near Oval Beach, making the hike feel like part of the experience instead of just the walk to the beach.
For our family, the hike made the beach feel even more rewarding. The kids had fun exploring the trails, climbing through the sand, and spotting little openings through the trees before finally reaching the water. It felt less like a regular beach walk and more like a mini family adventure through the dunes.
The hike to the beach near Saugatuck gave us shady trails, sandy paths, and that first peek of Lake Michigan.Getting to the beach felt like part of the adventure, especially with kids, towels, snacks, and all the beach-day cargo.
Family Tip:
Pack light if you plan to hike to the beach. Bring water, sunscreen, snacks, and only the beach gear you truly want to carry. Sand, hills, and overpacked bags are not exactly a dream team.
3. Spend Time at the Beach
A trip to Oval Beach in Saugatuck with kids should absolutely include beach time. The Lake Michigan shoreline gives families room to play, relax, swim, and enjoy a slower day. Pack sunscreen, towels, snacks, and patience, because sand will somehow follow everyone back into the car like it paid for gas.
Beach time is one of the easiest ways to slow down and enjoy Saugatuck with kids.
4. Rent a Donut Boat or Retro Boat in Saugatuck
One of our favorite Saugatuck memories was renting a donut boat and getting out on the water as a family. We rented through Retro Boat Rentals, which is located at The Old Boat House on Water Street. They offer donut boats, retro boats, Duffy boats, and pontoon rentals, so there are a few different options depending on your group size and what kind of boat day you want.
The donut boat ended up being one of our favorite family activities in Saugatuck because everyone could sit together around the table, relax under the umbrella, and slowly cruise the water together.

A helpful thing to know: outside alcohol and coolers are not allowed, but Retro Boat Rentals provides coolers and ice. You can purchase drinks from The Old Boat House before your rental, including beer, wine, hard ciders, seltzers, canned cocktails, soft drinks, and some snacks. You can bring your own snacks, but not your own cooler.
Family Tip:
Leave extra time for parking and getting checked in. Summer weekends in Saugatuck can get busy, and boat rentals are the kind of thing you do not want to be sprinting toward with kids, towels, and sunscreen flying everywhere.
5. Walk Around Downtown Saugatuck and Eat at The Mitten Brewing Company
Downtown Saugatuck is cute, walkable, and easy to enjoy with kids. You can wander into shops, grab ice cream, look around the waterfront area, and find plenty of places to eat without needing a complicated plan.
We also loved eating at The Mitten Brewing Company. It was casual, family-friendly, and exactly the kind of easy restaurant stop we needed after a day of sand, sun, and water. Places like this are always a win for us because everyone can find something they’ll eat, and nobody has to pretend they’re fancy after dragging half the beach back in their shoes.

For families, I would look at hotels or rentals near Saugatuck, Douglas, or Holland depending on your budget and plans. Holland can sometimes give you more hotel options while still keeping you close to Saugatuck and other Lake Michigan beach stops.

Best Places to Visit in Michigan with Kids: Beaches, Boats, Bears, Islands & Lake Michigan Sunsets
Michigan surprised us in the best way. One minute we were climbing sand dunes, the next we were riding bikes on Mackinac Island, cruising past the cliffs of Pictured Rocks, feeding bears apples, renting a donut boat in Saugatuck, and watching the sun melt into Lake Michigan like it had nowhere better to be.
If you are planning a Michigan family vacation, this guide pulls together our favorite places we have personally visited with kids, including Holland, Grand Haven, South Haven, Saugatuck, Douglas, Warren Dunes, Mackinac Island, St. Ignace, Oswald’s Bear Ranch, and Pictured Rocks.

Pictured Rocks was the showstopper of this trip. The cliffs, the clear green-blue water, the caves, the arches, and the boat ride all felt bigger and prettier than we expected. This is one of those places where photos look fake, except you are actually there with wind in your hair and kids asking for snacks every eleven minutes.
The Pictured Rocks boat tour is one of the best ways to see the cliffs, caves, arches, and Lake Superior shoreline.
We did a boat tour, and I would absolutely recommend seeing Pictured Rocks from the water. The colors in the cliffs are incredible, and the water looks tropical in certain areas, even though you are very much in Michigan and not the Caribbean.
Family Tip: Book the boat tour earlier in your trip if possible. Weather on Lake Superior can change quickly, and having flexibility gives you a backup day if tours are delayed or canceled.
The boat ride itself was part of the adventure, especially for kids who love being on the water.
Mackinac Island is one of the most unique family destinations in Michigan because there are no cars on the island. Instead, you get bikes, horse-drawn carriages, fudge shops, lake views, rocky beaches, historic sites, and that charming little “we stepped into another world” feeling.
Biking around Mackinac Island was one of our favorite family activities.
We loved biking, exploring the rocky shoreline, walking around town, seeing the famous Arch Rock area, and stopping for food and treats. Mackinac Island is touristy, yes, but in a fun, nostalgic, summer-vacation kind of way.
Arch Rock is one of the most popular photo stops on Mackinac Island.
Mackinac Island Tip: Staying on the island is magical but more expensive. Staying in St. Ignace or Mackinaw City can save money while still giving you easy ferry access.
3. St. Ignace
St. Ignace makes a great base for families visiting Mackinac Island, the Upper Peninsula, and nearby attractions. It is quieter and often more budget-friendly than staying directly on Mackinac Island.
St. Ignace is a convenient base for Mackinac Island ferries, lake views, and family-friendly stops.
We liked that St. Ignace gave us easy access to ferry rides, lake views, and nearby Upper Peninsula stops without the higher price tag of staying on the island. The kids especially loved spotting the pirate-themed Good Fortune Pirate Ship Adventure heading toward Mackinac Island, which made the whole ferry area feel even more fun and memorable.
4. Oswald’s Bear Ranch
Oswald’s Bear Ranch was a huge kid favorite. The kids loved seeing the bears up close and even getting to feed some of them apples, which instantly became one of the most talked-about moments of the trip. It was one of those stops that felt completely different from the usual beach-and-town vacation activities.
Oswald’s Bear Ranch was one of the most memorable kid-friendly stops on our Michigan trip.The bears were the main event, and the kids were completely fascinated.
If your kids love animals, this is a fun stop to add while traveling through the Upper Peninsula.
Good to Know: This is a casual, outdoorsy stop. Wear comfortable shoes and expect to spend time walking between viewing areas.
5. Saugatuck & Douglas
Saugatuck and Douglas were some of our favorite Lake Michigan towns for a family summer trip. This area has beaches, dune rides, boat rentals, cute restaurants, ice cream stops, and enough activity to make it feel like more than just a beach day.
Our donut boat rental in Saugatuck was such a fun and easy family activity.
We rented a donut boat through Retro Boat Rentals and loved it. It was relaxed, easy, and different from a typical pontoon ride. The kids thought it was hilarious, and honestly, so did the adults.
We also loved Oval Beach, Saugatuck Dune Rides, The Mitten Brewing Co., Temptations ice cream, the Douglas Root Beer Barrel, and the inflatable aqua park at Lake Arvesta Farms.

We loved ending the evening near the lighthouse and watching boats come in while the sky turned orange over Lake Michigan.

Warren Dunes is a great stop if your kids like climbing, running, and burning off the kind of energy that makes hotel hallways dangerous. The dunes are big, sandy, and fun, and the views are worth the climb.

This is an easy place to add to a southwest Michigan road trip, especially if you are already visiting South Haven, Saugatuck, Douglas, or Grand Haven.
